16" x 20" acrylic on stretched canvas
$240 when completed
This old barn stands beside Cherokee Valley Road in Catoosa County, GA, between Ringgold, GA, and Chattanooga, TN. An old photo shows it in early Fall, but I want to paint it as Spring arrives. There will be several more photos taken before I decide on the final color palette.

Glen Delough, County Wicklow, Ireland
11" x 14" oil on stretched canvas

This is another in a series of paintings of our trip to Ireland.

My Little Blue Boat
8" x 10" x 1/2" acrylic on gallery wrap canvas
$75
I don't really have a little blue boat and I don't live near the ocean. But sometimes it's nice to take a daydream ride and let the sea breeze blow through my mind.

Blasket Islands in Ireland
16" x 20" oil on stretched canvas
$240
This is another in a series of Ireland inspired paintings. The Blasket Islands are wild, windswept and "other worldly". We made lots of photos and I referenced several postcards and other images for this piece. The sky and water colors were very dark the day we were there, so I imagined a lighter atmosphere.

Beeing There - completed
10" x 8" acrylic on canvas covered hardboard
$65
This small clump of cattails had been bypassed for years until I discovered it right beside my parking space at the Post Office. Apparently I had not taken the time to "stop and smell the morning glories".

Reedy Veil
10" x 8" acrylic on canvas covered hardboard
$75
This was previously posted on my blog in December, '06. Since I'm somewhat under the weather at present, I hope everyone doesn't mind a little stroll down memory lane.
A digital photo of cattails was my inspiration for this work. I'm also using the same set of photos as basis for another work in progress - "Beeing There".
I should be back at the easel before too much longer.

Beeing There - progressing
10" x 8" acrylic on canvas covered hardboard
$65 when completed
Working from a photo can be limiting - if I let it be.
The photo is a guide - sometimes tight and inflexible but more often just a skeleton I use to hang layers of color. As I watch the colors interplay, the painting begins telling me what it wants to portray.

Just as I was taking a photo of cattails and morning glories, a bumble bee lit on one of the blooms.
I thought I'd work on a Spring subject, hoping that will speed things along toward warmer weather.

Grass Dancer - SOLD
8" x 10" x 1/2" acrylic on gallery wrap canvas -
SOLD, thanks Lourdes! -
It was the job of the grass dancers to flatten the grass in the arena before a powwow. Tying braids of sweetgrass to the dancers' belts produced a swaying effect.

Gothic Summer
10" x 8" oil on stretched canvas
$100
There has been so much snow and cold weather lately that I decided to go through some older works to find something warm.
This was painted plein air during August and it was hot, hot, hot . I was just remembering how it felt with the sunlight streaming through the canopy of leaves, the air thick with heat and the little buggies buzzing around my ankles.

Grass Dancer - in progress
8" x 10" x 1/2" gallery wrap stretched canvas
$80 - when completed
This is the beginning point of a painting featuring a Native American grass dancer. It is based on a photo taken at the annual Red Clay pow-wow south of Cleveland, TN.
This image isn't as crisp as I would have liked. The photo of the finished painting will be much sharper.

Last Sail of the Season
12" x 9" acrylic on canvas covered hardboard
$90
I was told that any good artist could produce an acceptable painting using only the colors red, yellow, black and white. At first I was doubtful, but I accepted the invitation to try.
How do you get green without using blue ???
Painting with a limited palette is indeed challenging but it stretches creativity. And I would invite anyone to try at least one painting using only these colors.
Maybe next time I'll try using only brown, black and white.
