Flower Moon is the second full moon in May

4" x 4" x 1/2" acrylic on gallery wrap canvas
This little 'sketch' is an idea for a larger painting - sometime.

There are two full moons (sometimes known as a blue moon) in May this year. Flower Moon is another name for a May full moon.

These acrylics are more watercolor transparent than my regular acrylics. At first I wasn't happy with the coverage, but the more I looked, the more dreamlike the scene appears. And it's a warmup for a larger work, so I think it'll be ok.

been really busy

Just letting everyone know I haven't forsaken painting.

It seems there's a price to be paid when you are an artist. I'm not talking about the cost of paints, canvas, brushes, etc. That's understandable. You gotta have materials to work with.

I'm talking about after the canvas is painted and drying. There's the varnishing, protective coatings, framing, attaching hardware and wire. Image photography must be done to capture the work for websites, blogs, and sending to the printer. Then there is the cataloging, contacting galleries, researching galleries, phone calls, etc.

Planning art shows ( two this week ) eats up painting time. Keeping displays in good condition is always needful. Then there's the bubble-wrap nightmare of protecting the paintings you've created during transport.

I could go on but I know you'd rather not hear me whine. :o)

Wrapping up, I must say that I do love painting. Sometimes I just need a keeper.

Cool Water

8" x 10" original oil painted en plein air on canvas covered hardboard -
The fountain is on the Brenau College Campus in Gainesville, GA. This painting was done during a 'paint-out' sponsored by the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and will be used as reference for a larger work, probably 16"x20", to be done sometime when I get caught up.

paintout in Gainesville, GA

I'm back from my trip to Richmond, VA.

However, I'm leaving again tomorrow for a paint-out in Gainesville, GA. It's sponsored by the Quinlan Visual Arts Center (www.quinlanartscenter.org). If you're in the area, there'll be lots of us doing plein air work around town, at the marina and at the lake front. Stop by and say "hi". We love to answer questions about our artwork.

I'll be posting the paintings in a few days, so be sure to check back.

Quietude of the Sky

8" x 10" original impressionist oil painting on canvas covered hardboard - $80 including shipping -

Day in and day out our gaze is fixed horizontally, always seeing the landscape around us. We don't take time to just look up into the sky. If someone were to ask us, "What color is the sky?" our immediate answer would be "Blue". Take some time to experience all the colors that appear in the sky. You'll be amazed at this constantly changing wonder.

Planting Moon is the First May Full Moon - SOLD

8" x 8" x 1/2" original oil on stretched gallery wrap canvas - $70 including shipping - SOLD -
This year there will be two full moons in May. Planting Moon is one of the names and seems to fit this early moon. Because of a hard frost in mid-April, some crops which were planted early didn't make it through, and must be planted again.

Greener is Better

8" x 10" original oil on canvas covered hardboard - $85 including shipping -
There has been a lot of comment lately about global warming and the urging for people to "go green". Sometimes I love to look at trees and soak in their beauty, their colors and their seeming wisdom to the ways of nature. This scene is imaginary, but I hope it actually exists and will for generations to come.

Hillside Above the Tunnel progressing

8" x 10" original oil on canvas covered hardboard - $85 when completed including shipping -
This is the hillside above the famous tunnel in Tunnel Hill, GA. The heavy April frost affected the tree foliage making it appear more like Fall. This painting is in progress but should be finished within a few days - depending on the weather.

Spring Mountain Shadows - SOLD

9" x 12" original oil on canvas covered hardboard - $108 including shipping - SOLD -
The April heavy frost in this North Georgia area killed much of the trees' new leaf growth, giving the impression of Fall colors in Spring. The colors are quite wonderful, but difficult to match when painting them onto canvas.

As this little creek daily flows through the park and meadows in Tunnel Hill, it reminds me of the varying bright spots and shadows in our lives.

Aprils Fall

8" x 10" original oil painted en plein air on canvas covered hardboard -
$85 including shipping -
In mid-April there was a hard frost which killed much of the new Spring growth on trees in this North Georgia area. The trees have an almost early Fall foliage coloring, but the grasses are newly green.

The Fallen One is a work in progress

12" x 9" original oil on gallery wrapped canvas -
$108 including shipping (when completed) -
This is from a plein air sketch and a really bad photo. I'm working on portraying the spirit of the tree which appears to be holding up a fallen brother. The foliage is roughly laid in and the trunks and grass still need work. The larger tree will be even larger in foliage.
I will post the finished painting with a PayPal 'buy now' button soon.

Greek Garden - color study

This is a 12" x 9" color study for a larger (36" x 24") commissioned painting. My reference was a black and white photo, so I had to decide which color palette to use. Rather that use the standard yellow, red, blue palette I decided to just reach into my bag of tricks and choose similar colors.

I chose these oil colors for the finished work: oxide of chromium green, naples yellow, mauve (blue shade), burnt sienna, black and white.

If you would like to buy this color study for only $20 - including shipping - click on the PayPal buy now button.

Storm - study in black and brown

10" x 8" acrylic wash on canvas covered hardboard -
$65 including shipping - sold unframed -
This is a study using only black, brown and white acrylic . I've been thinking about the Nor'easter that has been hitting the Eastern seaboard and how Spring has suddenly become a season of storm. The black and brown seem to portray the feeling of these storms.

Painted View

8" x 16" acrylic on stretched canvas -
$135 including shipping -
When I paint an imaginary landscape, I always include mountains and flowing water. To me the mountains suggest permanence of wisdom, and the water suggests flexibility of spirit.

photo of Crawfish Springs - Chickamauga, GA

This is a digital photo taken at Crawfish Springs in Chickamauga, GA.

It's a lovely, quaint little town in NW Georgia, filled with restaurants, little shops and friendly people - and Fred.

This scene is absolutely an artist's gold mine for capturing images for paintings. The movement of the water folds the shadows. Sunlight illuminates the entire area, enriching colors and deepening shadows. Perspective lengthens the view. There is so much to see here !

The photo is high resolution. I invite you to click on the image, enlarging your view, and enjoy all the beauty.
